US wastewater by state

Share of each state's sampling sites that CDC rates High or Very High for this pathogen, from viral genetic material measured in sewage. It counts infections whether or not anyone was tested. Back to World Pulse.

What the numbers are. CDC's wastewater viral activity level (WVAL) is an index per sampling site per week, binned into Very Low / Low / Moderate / High / Very High using pathogen-specific cutoffs. The map colours the share of a state's sites in the top two bins, because the index itself has no intuitive scale and one outlier site can reach five figures. "Median" is that state's middle site.
Caveats. Sites are not evenly spread: a state with three sites is three towns, not a state. Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and any state without a boundary in the map file appear in the table only. Source: CDC NWSS (public domain), updated Fridays.
