Method & caveats.
Cap share = a contract's average-per-year value (APY) ÷ that season's salary
cap. This is a stable cost-concentration proxy, not
a live cap sheet — it ignores signing-bonus proration, restructures, and
void years (which the free OverTheCap data doesn't carry). Players are
attributed to a team via that season's roster (join on gsis_id).
Top 3 sums a team's three priciest contracts;
Total roster sums every rostered contract — and because APY
exceeds the real per-year cap hit (deals are backloaded) and counts everyone
who was rostered across the season, the total routinely exceeds 100%. Read
it as a roster-investment index (~100% ≈ league-average commitment), not
literal cap-space usage.
Off / Def ranks (1 = best) come in two flavors:
pts = scoring (points scored / allowed) and yds = total
net yards (gross passing − sack yards + rushing; defense = net yards
allowed), both regular-season. Outcome is the furthest playoff round
reached. Free data via nflverse / OverTheCap; refreshed weekly.
